What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. Each interval is known as a "pomodoro", from the Italian word for 'tomato', after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a university student.
Why is it so effective?
The technique is effective because it instills a sense of urgency and focus. By working in short bursts, you are less likely to get distracted or burned out. The frequent breaks help keep your mind fresh and focused. It also helps you manage distractions and control your time, rather than letting time control you.
How it works
When you start a timer session, it will count as a completed pomodoro once you reach half of the set duration. For example, if you set a 25-minute timer, reaching 12.5 minutes (half-way point) will count the pomodoro as complete for your statistics and pomodoro count.
This half-time rule applies to the long break trigger as well. After completing 4 pomodoro sessions (each reaching at least halfway), the app will automatically start a long break instead of a regular short break.
How to use this app
- Choose a task you want to work on.
- Start the timer (25 minutes by default).
- Work on the task until the timer rings.
- Take a short break (5 minutes).
- Every 4 pomodoros, take a longer break (15-30 minutes).
